Former Super Eagles striker Nwankwo Kanu has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader and 2023 presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, helped him launch his Kanu Heart Foundation with a monetary payment.

Kanu made the remarks on Saturday, March 19, 2022, when he and other ex-internationals paid Tinubu a visit to wish him a happy 70th birthday, which falls on March 29, 2022.

Former goalkeepers Peter Rufai, Ike Shorunmu, and Dosu Joseph are among those attending, as is former captain Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, and defenders Taribo West and Uche Okechukwu.

Tijani Babangida and Mutiu Adepoju, all midfielders, and Victor Ikpeba and Obafemi Martins, both forwards, round out the roster of guests.

Kanu was cited as adding in a statement released by the former Lagos state governor’s media adviser, Tunde Rahman, that Tinubu gave the first seed money for the effort in 2002.

“Without that money, there would have been no Kanu Foundation to undertake the heart procedures that saved so many lives,” Kanu explained.

Since its inception in 2000, the Kanu Heart Foundation has helped 538 children of diverse ages gain access to free open heart surgery in hospitals around the world.

The former Arsenal footballer was also diagnosed with a congenital heart condition and had surgery in 1996, which nearly ruined his playing career but he recovered completely.
