A junior student at the Simple Faith Schools in Agbara, Lagos State, has reportedly died after being flogged by his teacher.
Emmanuel Amidu passed away in the Surulere Teaching Hospital of the Lagos University.
The victim’s father, Akinola Amidu, said that the 12-year-old JSS2 pupil was flogged by a teacher on May 12, 2022, for failing to complete an assignment.
He reported that his son began vomiting shortly after the assault and was brought to the hospital, where he died on May 13, 2022.
According to Punch, the father claimed that the school administration was covering up his son’s death and protecting the mathematics instructor who whipped Emmanuel and the rest of the class for failing to do their homework.
He said: “Thursday I was at home because I was on leave. I recall that Emmanuel begged me for money to get a new exercise book, and I gave him N500 so that he could purchase the book and give his sister the remaining change.
“The school administration informed me later that day that Emmanuel had vomited. Meanwhile, this youngster left his family without any health concerns. I had to go to school, and he was transferred to the hospital.
“I later learned that the entire incident began when their instructor, Mr. Steven, punished the entire class for failing to complete a maths homework.
“The day before, Emmanuel was using my phone’s torchlight to complete his homework, but I had to retrieve it from him and his sister because I wanted to contact the office. We experienced electrical troubles at home.
“My son was taken from me at LUTH. In the meantime, the school administration rushed to the Morogbo Police Station in Agbara to report that my kid had died from vomiting.
“How can someone die from vomiting if there is no cause? The school administration is attempting to protect the teacher.”
Akinola, age 45, sought the arrest and prosecution of the teacher, urging the state government and the police to provide justice for the family.
Rachael, Emmanuel’s 13-year-old sister, told the publication that Emmanuel vomited after being pummelling.
She said: “Our English teacher informed me that my brother was not feeling well and had not eaten and been sleeping.
“His friend informed me they were beaten for not doing their math homework, and he spent the rest of the day sleeping and vomiting,”
The principal of the school, Adetayo Akanji, told Punch: “I was present on Friday when Emanuel passed away; it was terrible that it occurred in this manner. Yes, Steven spanked the entire class for not doing their math homework, but he did not want to harm anyone.
“Several hours later, he (Emmanuel) rested his head on his desk and began to vomit; water was then poured over his head.
“When he began to vomit, the owner contacted me and we rushed him to the hospital. In fact, the father joined us when his son was brought to LUTH, where he and I were frantically searching for his prescribed medications. But by the time we returned, he had given up. The incident was reported to the Morogbo Police Station by our school.”
