In an early morning stampede at a new generation church in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at least 21 people are thought dead.
According to a witness, the incident occurred during the fourth gift and food item delivery by the church.
Some guests arrived on Friday, while others arrived as early as 6.30 a.m. this morning for an event that was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
The witness stated that some individuals who were meant to have a sports session arrived about 8 a.m. and unlocked the little gate, allowing the surging mob to force its way in and causing the stampede.
“The occurrence occurred this morning. The church extended invitations to its fourth food and gift item distribution. Others arrived as early as 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, while others arrived on Friday.
“Those involved in sporting activities opened the little entrance, and the crowd’s desire to enter through the small gate resulted in a rush. I counted maybe twenty-one people on the ground,” he stated.
He stated that many patients were transported to an unnamed hospital in Port Harcourt.
Iringe Grace Koko, the public relations officer for the Rivers State Police Command, stated that she was en route to the scene of the incident to obtain correct details.
