A new crisis has erupted in the All Progressives Congress (APC), with Niger State Governor Sani Bello assuming leadership of the ruling party until the March 26 convention.

Bello stepped into the shoes of his Yobe counterpart, Governor Mai Mala Buni, who has been presiding over the operations of the ruling party since Adams Oshiomhole’s departure two years ago, surprising many.

Bello got a report from the party’s zoning committee shortly after taking office, just in time for the convention.

Last week, the zoning committee was formed, with Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as its chairman.

The Niger State governor claimed his participation at the party’s national secretariat has President Muhammadu Buhari’s endorsement in a chat with reporters following the ceremony.

He stated that he would visit the party’s national secretariat “nearly every day” to perform his duties.

“Well, every time there is a large event, we strengthen up security,” he responded when asked why security at the party’s national headquarters was ramped up.

“We have a large event today, and all of the chairmen have arrived, so they are responsible for maintaining law and order.”

“The majority of my coworkers have come to support me in receiving the report. You are aware that the zoning committee report is critical. And all of the governors are here to back me up. They may now go perform their work at the zonal level.”

Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, Secretary of the APC Caretaker Committee, stated Buni was on a medical trip in his remarks.

The report’s contents were not made public.

Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), and Hope Uzodinma (Imo) were among the state governors present at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja.
