The Sarkin Hausawa of Ondo, Alhaji Abdulsalam Yusuf, has stated that the recent attack on the Hausa community in Ondo town, which resulted in the deaths of five persons, was not a robbery at gunpoint, as the police have alleged.
According to him, the attack was aimed towards the Hausa community.
Sarkin Hausawa informed Daily Trust that four people were slain in the attack that occurred in the Hausa hamlet of Sabo, while another person was killed in the Hausa community of Igba.
Since Sunday’s terrorist attack on the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo LGA, he claimed, the Hausa communities have been living in fear.
Yusuf stated, “We dismiss the police account; it is not accurate that the incident involved an armed robbery.” If the assailants were armed robbers, they would have seized property or jewels; instead, they did not, and the attacks were directed on two Hausa communities.
“Four persons perished in the Sabo neighbourhood of Akure; two of them were Hausa and the other two were Yoruba who had gone to a teahouse to eat noodles. The attackers did not take anything of value, nor did they acquire anything from anyone.
“During the second assault in Igba, a suya vendor was slain. It was therefore not a robbery, but rather an attack against the Hausa communities in Ondo.”
SP Funmilayo Odunlami, the police spokesperson in Ondo State, classified the event as an armed robbery in an earlier statement.
The statement reads in part, “The attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been brought to a hoax being spread by some troublemakers in an effort to provoke panic, tension, and unrest within the state.
“The leadership wishes to say unequivocally that there was no retaliation attack on the Hausa population in the Sabo area of Ondo town or anywhere else in the state, as these warmongers have claimed.
“At 0110 hours on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, guys of the underworld attempted to rob a J5 vehicle with plate number MKA – 469 YJ carrying onions and potatoes from Zaria to Ore. The vehicle made a stop in Ondo town and was attacked.
“During the attempted robbery, the bandits shot the driver while the motor boy escaped with a bullet wound. Additionally, a motorcyclist and a bystander were struck by stray gunshots.
The victims engaged in this failed heist are of Yoruba, Igbo, and Northern descent, and it is disappointing that these peddlers, who are out to do harm, did not corroborate the narrative before spreading this untruth.
Since then, an investigation has been launched, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the attackers.
