An explosion in Okene, the central district of Kogi State, reportedly claimed the life of one individual and injured others.
The SHAUNTV has learned that the explosion occurred on Thursday evening in the Idoji neighbourhood of Okene, where people, including masquerades, had congregated to celebrate the annual Echane festival.
Usman Animuko Sani, an eyewitness, stated that the sound of the explosion was heard by many inhabitants of the vicinity, and that one man lost his legs and several more were injured.
According to him, one of the victims passed away en route to Okengwe General Hospital.
Sani added that some of the injured were eventually referred from the main hospital to Lokoja.
The Okene explosion occurred a few weeks after two explosions in Kabba, in which a woman perished and her younger brother lost a leg.
SP William Ayah, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, verified the incident and said that one of the victims died in the hospital.
“More information is expected from the agents on the ground,” he continued.
In the meantime, he added that the Kogi State Police Commissioner, CP Edward Egbuka, has dispatched an anti-bomb team to the location to determine the cause of the explosion.
