Deborah Samuel, a student at Shehu Shagari College of Education, was lynched by a crowd on Thursday. According to the Sokoto State Police Command, two individuals have been arrested in connection with the lynching.
Ms. Samuel was reportedly a 200-level student at the college’s Department of Early Childhood Education.
In a voice note she sent to her class’s WhatsApp group, the victim was accused of blasphemy against the Muslim prophet Muhammad.
Sanusi Abubakar, the state’s police public relations officer, said in a statement that other individuals seen in the popular video on Twitter “will soon be arrested as well.”
Mr. Abubakar stated that the students “forcibly removed the victim from the security room where she had been hidden by school administrators, murdered her, and set the building on fire.”
According to him, the school had been closed and officers had been dispatched to provide protection on the school grounds.
The state police commissioner, Kamaldeen Okunlola, urged locals to preserve calm and engage in lawful activities, he added. According to him, the issue is under control.
The statement read, in part, as follows: “At approximately 0900 hours, a distress call was received from Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, indicating that students were rioting over one female student named Deborah Samuel, a level two student, who was accused of making a social media post that blasphemed the holy prophet Muhammad (SAW). Students forcibly pulled the victim from the security room where she had been concealed by school administrators, murdered her, and set the building on fire.
“Students joined forces with criminals to block the Sokoto/Jega road.”
DC Operations led a team of police officers and all other operational commanders in the state to the school, where the road was cleared and the situation was brought under control. Two students were taken into custody in connection with the crime.
The school administration has shuttered the school, and police officers have been deployed to provide strict security.
The statement said that the other individuals identified by the incident’s circulating video clip will be caught.
