Police in Edo State have freed 11 kidnap victims in the state, including an army officer named Chimbi Auta, with the help of vigilantes.
The victims were kidnapped by gunmen on March 25, 2022, at Ute, Edo State’s Uhunwonde Local Government Area, while traveling from Ogoja, Cross River State, to Lagos State.
The hoodlums stabbed the soldier among the victims multiple times after finding he was a military official, according to reports.
“The police received information that a Young Shall Grow bus traveling from Ogoja in Cross River State to Lagos State with 11 passengers was forced to a halt, kidnapped, and whisked the occupants of the vehicle into the woods,” said Kontongs Bello, the state’s police spokesperson.
“When the police received the information, they joined forces with local vigilantes to conduct a jungle search around Ute Community in Uhunwonde Local Government, where the culprits were apprehended.”
The alleged kidnappers, who had already tied their victims in the bush, opened fire on security personnel as soon as they were spotted, according to Bello.
He claimed the kidnappers fled into the woods after abandoning their victims.
“One of the victims, a soldier who was recognized as military people by the kidnappers, was stabbed all over his body and also collected his uniform, which was seen in his bag,” he claimed.
He urged the public to continue to support the police by providing genuine information that leads to the arrest of criminals and their associates, while reiterating the command’s commitment to a crime-free State.
