At least five individuals, including two police officers, a university professor, and two others, have been killed in two Local Government Areas of Benue State.

Our correspondent reports that two policemen were gunned down in Yelewata of Guma LGA, a border town between the states of Benue and Nasarawa, while three more were slain in Jootar of Ukum LGA, a border town between the states of Benue and Taraba.

A villager told our correspondent via telephone on Friday morning that the officers were shot and killed around 10 p.m. on Thursday, while their weapons were stolen.

A witness stated that Fred Akaayar, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at the Federal University, Wukari in Taraba State; Aondo Ayange Apever and Shiaondo Kachina were engaged in the Jootar killings.

The witness told our correspondent that the three pals were unwinding at a leisure establishment in Jootar when unknown assailants on motorcycles opened fire on them.

In the incident that occurred at 7 p.m. on Thursday, according to the witness, the other persons at the centre fled to safety.

SP Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Benue Command, confirmed the Guma incident when contacted.

In response to a text message sent by our correspondent, the PPRO responded, “I’ve been informed that two police officers were murdered in an operation, but I’m still awaiting details.”
