The Presidency has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari makes his own decisions and implements them without the assistance of a “cabal” or “back room boys.”

Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President for Media and Publicity, issued a statement titled “President’s Laudatory Role in the APC Primary” on Tuesday in response to revelations about the conduct of those close to President Buhari during the period.

The statement read: “The media are swamped with fabricated allegations regarding the President’s role in the flagbearer contest: whether he had a preferred candidate and whether manoeuvres were made to install them; whether the chosen flagbearer was the President’s choice or another. And never-ending.

“Speculation is simple. However, facts are easy. The President consistently claimed to have a preferred candidate. He stated that the APC’s democratic primary will determine who would head the party in the upcoming election.

President Buhari makes his own decisions and carries them out without the support of a so-called “cabal” or back room boys. Those who continue to attack the APC and the President by promoting conspiracy theories and making all manner of speculative claims about who did what or did not do it must realise this crucial fact about the country’s leader. In Nigeria, the strong leader concept has persisted for far too long.

People assume that if you are a leader, you control everything, including the outcome of elections.

Fortunately for Nigeria, President Buhari does not face such restrictions. He refuses to operate as the democratically elected autocrat.”

He stated that the President’s goal leading up to the primary was to ensure a transparent, free, and fair process that would restore people’s faith in democracy by bringing excellent governance to the local level.

The presidential spokesman stated that people’s and the foreign community’s faith in the nation’s democracy had received a significant boost following the completion of the APC nomination, citing the president’s mission: “The flagbearer has been selected. He enjoys the undivided support of the President. The winning march continues.”

The statement said, “During election season, we all anticipate heightened speculation.

“Like private investigators – or fiction writers – the media sifts through every word uttered, scrutinises every photograph taken, and reports every clue suggested, looking for signs of who is supporting whom.

There is nothing more intriguing for this type of speculative journalism than a party nominee primary.

However, it only occurs every four years, or every eight years after President Buhari’s second term. Therefore, the media must capitalise on this opportunity.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) party flagbearer primary must have been a huge letdown for those who gathered to witness a disaster. No intrigue, division, controversy, defeated candidates contesting the outcome, splits, or third-party candidates.

“Only the determination to rally around the selected candidate will give success and a third term for the APC in February 2023,”

“The opposition’s response to our successful nomination convention has been a counteroffensive, preventing us from going on the offensive. In certain cases, there is clear proof of a plot to destabilise the ruling party and smear the President.”
