The Nigerian Army has accused a soldier of cowardice after he was allegedly abandoned by his teammates in a viral video.
It was the soldier, not his teammates, who absconded during the operation, according to the report.
In a statement, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director Army Public Relations, said the video was a distortion of what happened between the soldier and his comrades.
“The attention of the Nigerian Army(NA) has been called to a viral video circulating on social media on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, in which a soldier claimed to have been abandoned by his teammates during operations,” he stated.
“Contrary to the soldier’s claims and impressions in the video footage, preliminary investigations have revealed that the video footage was a deliberate attempt by the soldier to shield himself from being accused of cowardice for abandoning his colleagues during an ongoing clearance operation in Gurara, Niger State.”
“It may be noted that NA soldiers recently carried out a clearance operation in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State,” he continued. Unfortunately, following an engagement, the claimed soldier abandoned his companions and fled in an obvious display of cowardice and suspected sabotage, which contradicts the military profession’s tenets.
“Aware of the seriousness of his actions and the implications, the soldier secretly released the footage to the internet in an attempt to incite public outrage and cover up his cowardice.” The soldier’s actions reveal the esprit de corps and comradery that are synonymous with a military unit and combat organization, especially during operations. As a result, the soldier’s actions are out of character and go against the military’s principles and basic beliefs.
“As a result, the video evidence is a complete distortion of what happened between the soldier and his coworkers.”
“The soldier has returned to his unit, and more investigations are underway to determine the reasons for his unprofessional behavior.”
