Stephen Ojapa Ojapa, the parish priest of St. Patrick Catholic Church, and Oliver Okpara, his assistant, were taken in Gidan Mai Kanbu village, Kafur local government area, Katsina State, by gunmen suspected to be Terrorist bandits.

Local reports in both the Gozaki and Marabar Kanya towns reported that, in the early hours of Wednesday, bandits invaded the church premises of the reverend fathers and abducted them along with two individuals believed to be their visitors.

A local of Marabar Kanya who requested anonymity stated that the alleged bandits arrived on motorcycles but parked them in a remote location before walking to the church grounds.

“According to inhabitants of Gidan Maikanbu, they did not hear gunfire during the attack, but the strong movement of motorcycles was noticeable. “It wasn’t until after the kidnappers had fled that members of the church’s personnel began to rush outside to alert the community,” he explained.

In an online statement signed by the Director of Communications, Chris Omotosho, the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto acknowledged the kidnapping.

“At twelve o’clock this morning, May 25th, 2022, armed men broke into the rectory of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Gidan Maikambo, Kafur LGA, Katsina State.

“The parish priest, his assistant Rev. Frs. Stephen Ojapa, MSP, and Oliver Okpara, as well as two youngsters who were in the house, were abducted.

“There is no information about their whereabouts. Please pray for their safety and liberation. Thank you,” read the statement.

In a separate occurrence, four people were reportedly taken during a raid by suspected bandits on the village of Bare-bari in the Safana Local Government Area.

A resident of Babban-dudu village, which is close to the assaulted hamlet, reported that Alhaji Dan Mashubulle, a prominent politician in the village, was among those abducted during the raid.

He claimed that the operation lasted several hours due to the robbers’ house-to-house search for livestock.

When reached, the police spokesman for the state, Gambo Isa, stated that the command was unaware of the kidnapping, but that he would call the Divisional Police Officer for the Kafur local government region to learn more.
