Segun Oni, a former governor of Ekiti State, has denied allegations that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu would join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) if he fails to receive the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential nomination for the 2023 general elections.

Segun Oni, who is the SDP candidate for governor in the upcoming June 18 governorship election in Ekiti State, stated this on Wednesday in Abuja after inaugurating the party’s sub convention committee, which he chairs.

He stated that the SDP remains open to those who share its vision and mission, as well as those who are willing to strengthen democracy and good government.

According to him, candidates and observers should be guaranteed that the convention will be transparent and free of vote-buying, delegate bribery, and animosity.

Segun Oni responded to a claim that Tinubu had reached out to the opposition party for prospective defection by stating, “Too many rumours. Allow me to introduce the SDP. As far as we are concerned, everyone is welcome to enter. We are not restricting opportunities. We will wait.

“Each procedure will be taken carefully and without favouritism. Don’t speculate excessively.

“We will be holding our conference. According to my knowledge, bargaining and consensus cannot be constrained. We will also permit everything to be carried out in a manner that teaches people a lesson.

We will neither compel anyone, nor will we bulldoze our way to victory. Everything will be open and honest. No portion of our convention will occur during the wee hours of the morning.”

He further underlined that the SDP had no factions and that disgruntled members would be convinced to dismiss their complaints for the sake of the party’s future.

He stated, “This is the SDP that INEC recognised; if it is not recognised by INEC, I would not run for office.” Almost soon after I completed the first round of procedures, INEC released a list of accredited candidates for governorship in Ekiti, which includes my name, indicating that the process has been completed at this office.

“The facts speak for themselves; if there is anything to discuss, I would want to ask our brothers to allow us to do so.

“Now is not the time for Nigerians to be distracted. Nigeria must improve; it is not about us as individuals, but about Nigeria as a whole.

“We will engage some of them with whom we are acquainted. We must communicate, resolve our issues, and move forward as a group. Because they are all relevant to Nigeria’s effort to progress forward.”

Dr. Olu Agunloye, National Secretary of the party and former Minister of Defense, pledged on behalf of the SDP to host the best national convention ever.

He stated, “You will witness a convention where delegates do not vote based on the dictates of money. SDP delegates will vote according to their morals.”
