Two suspects detained in connection with the ritual murder of a 4-year-old kid in the Lapai Local Government Area of the state of Niger have been paraded by the Niger State Police Command.

The suspects were saved from lynching by a crowd when the boy’s body was recovered four days after his disappearance.

Mubarak Yunusa and Emmanuel Okuagba have been taken to SCID Minna for discreet investigation, according to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, on Tuesday, May 24.

“On 19 May 2022 at approximately 0700 hours, a 4-year-old boy named Hussaini Ibrahim from the Angwan Hausawa neighbourhood of Lapai was reported missing,” the statement added.

“However, on 20 May 2022 at approximately 2100 hours, it was reported that Mubarak Yunusa, a 27-year-old man from the Magaji primary school neighbourhood, was spotted with a weird sack moving towards a nearby stream.

“On receiving this information, police officers assigned to the Lapai Division apprehended Mubarak Yunusa.

“During interrogation, the suspect admitted that he threw a dead corpse bundled in a sack in a river in the Lapai region. He also admitted that the sack was supplied to him by his shop landlord, Emannuel Okuagba, who resides in Lapai and is 43 years old and from Anambra State.

“In the course of the investigation, Mubarak led a team of police officers to the river, where the decomposing body of the missing youngster was found concealed in a bag and transported to the Lapai general hospital for an autopsy.

“CP Monday Bala Kuryas, fsi, Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, ordered a comprehensive inquiry as the two suspects were transported to SCID Minna for a discreet investigation.

“Since a result, an angry mob organised at the Lapai Police Division to demand the suspects’ release so that they might be lynched, but as their efforts proved futile, the mob attacked the suspects’ shop and home and burned them on fire.

“In the meantime, the case is being investigated, and the suspects will be arraigned in court for prosecution as soon as the inquiry is complete.”

“The public is now asked to refrain from mob violence and jungle justice, and to assist the police and other security authorities in carrying out their legal duties to ensure the administration of justice.”
