Mrs Olomi Sunday, the women leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Koro ward in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, was slain during a rescue operation by a local vigilante.
Late Olomi was one of three ward women leaders and others kidnapped from an 18-seater passenger bus on the way back from the APC’s state executive inauguration at the Kwara State Banquet Hall last week.
In separate interviews with Daily Trust on Sunday, the Transition Implementation Committee (TIC) Chairman of Ekiti Local Government, Hon Kayode Bayode, and the legislator representing the council in the State House of Assembly, Hon Ganiyu Gabriel Afolarin, corroborated the occurrence.
The dead was slain following an exchange of gunfire with the abductors, according to the TIC chairman, who identified the other two ward women leaders as Mrs Reachel Alasi (Obbo Ayegunle ward) and Mrs Yemisi Oloke Oni (Eruku ward).
“A (N20m) ransom had been arranged, but our vigilantes insisted on going to rescue the victims.” Mrs. Olomi was tragically killed during the gun duel on Sunday. The males were also injured, and one of them is in critical condition as a result of the bullets. “I’m currently at the hospital in the council where they were brought for treatment,” he explained.
“Yes, we lost the lady leader of Eruku ward (Mrs Olomi Sunday) after an exchange of gunfire between the abductors and our local vigilantes,” Hon Ganiyu Gabriel Afolarin stated. I am a member of the delegation that will make a condolence visit to the dead family. The other five captives, however, were rescued, and no ransom was paid at the end of the day.”
