A Magistrate’s Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has sentenced a woman named Blessing Stephen to ten years in prison for conspiracy and child trafficking.
In her ruling on the case involving Stephen, who was described as “unrepentant and hardened,” Chief Magistrate Felicitas Amanze observed that the prosecution had proven she misled the child’s mother, Abigail Monday, into selling her infant for N200,000 in exchange for N20,000.
On count one, she was sentenced to three years in prison, and on count two, she was sentenced to seven years in prison. According to the top magistrate, the penalties will be served in order.
The court also ordered that the child’s mother report to the court three times a week for the next year to sweep and dust the courtroom’s furniture.
Esther Okorienta, a legal officer representing the International Federation of Women Lawyers, told journalists following the court decision that the decision will act as a deterrence to child traffickers.
