Major CL Datong, who was abducted when bandits attacked the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna last month, has been freed.
The incident occurred on August 24, 2021, and two senior officers were killed.
Deputy Director Army Public Relations 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Colonel Ezindu Idimah, said troops rescued Datong on Friday night.
The operation that led to his rescue led to the destruction of several identified bandits’ camps in Afaka and Birnin Gwari areas of the state, according to him.
On September 17, 2021, scores of bandits were killed during the operation.
As directed by the Chief of Army Staff, the Division in conjunction with the Air Task Force, Department of State Services, and other security agencies conducted operations in the general area of Afaka to find and rescue the officer.
“The troops arrived at a camp believed to be the location where Maj CL Datong was being held. In the camp, the troops exchanged fire with the bandits before being overpowered by their superior firepower.
“The gallant troops were able to rescue the captured officer, who sustained a minor injury but was treated in a medical facility and turned over to NDA for further action,” he said.
For their part in the success of this operation, he commended the efforts of the Nigerian Air Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Police, and patriotic Nigerians.
Two (2) NDA officers were killed in shootings by assailants. The operations will continue until the assailants are captured or neutralized.
