The Lagos State magistrate’s court has denied bail to Nollywood actor Olarenwaju Omiyinka, better known as Baba Ijesha.
He has been detained since April when he was arrested for harassing a 14-year-old girl.
His bail was granted in May, but he was kept in police custody because he was unable to meet the conditions of the grant.
Kayode Olabiran, his lawyer, urged the court on Wednesday to release him due to his deteriorating health condition.
However, in his ruling, P. E Nwaka, ruled that the court cannot grant the actor bail because the matter is beyond its jurisdiction.
Furthermore, the judge explained that the case had already been filed with the High Court.
Police prosecutor Yetunde Cardoso said the matter is now beyond the police’s reach.
“Mr Olanrewaju was actually granted bail during the JUSUN strike, but he was unable to meet the terms and was charged properly today (Wednesday).”
The case has already been filed before the high court, and the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice has taken over investigation from the police.
We have handed over the case to the DPP, so the case is before them (the DPP). “It has nothing to do with the police anymore, the DPP is now in charge,” she said.
