One of the suspects accused of the brutal gang rape and murder of 6-year-old girl in South Africa, was beaten and killed by a mob of angry people at the weekend.
Recall that Inathi Mhlahlo went missing in Mdantsane, East London after she went to a shop to buy crisps and some sweets. Her half naked body was found in bushes five hours laters by her neighbours who had embarked on a frantic search.
She was reportedly gang raped by three men, stabbed near the neck and dumped not far from her family home. The other two suspects are currently on the run. Pictured at screenshots from video of the 23-year-old man after he was beaten to death.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Khaya Tonjeni, who confirmed the development on Sunday, November 1, said a group of community members from Zone 8 allegedly beat the man to death on Friday.
“Senior police management in the Eastern Cape have strongly condemned acts of vigilantism which led to the murder of a man in Mdantsane,” said Tojeni.
“It is alleged that on Friday evening, a group of community members from NU8 chased, assaulted and murdered a man they alleged to be behind the murder of a six-year-old girl whose lifeless body was found on the roadside.”
Tonjeni said a case or murder has been opened.
“Police are following strong leads and no arrest has been made as yet.” he added.
A person who identified himself as the dead man’s cousin told reportes on Saturday night that he “got what he deserved”
Meanwhile, hundreds of people attended a vigil at Mdantsane NU8 on Saturday, October 31, to mourn the child.
