Separate attacks by gunmen at the weekend in Kwara led to the abduction of 30 people from two communities.
The victims, including a pastor and his wife, as well as three other passengers, are still being held by the kidnappers who terrorized the communities.
The kidnappers intercepted a Sienna Bus carrying seven passengers along the Oke-Onigbin/Omu-Aran highway in one incident.
As a second incident, a Toyota Hiace bus with 21 passengers and the pastor’s car were simultaneously intercepted by gunmen at Ekan-Meje/Ekiti axis both in Kwara South, including a pastor and his wife.
Four of the seven passengers, however, were rescued by police, while the three others were abducted.
The police also rescued unharmed 20 passengers on the Toyota Hiace bus.
The Sienna Bus, which was conveying passengers from Ekiti State, was stopped by six gunmen who emerged from the bush and marched the seven passengers into the bush along the Oke-Onigbin/Omuaran highway.
The pastor’s car and Toyota Hiace commercial bus were also seized at gunpoint at the Ekan-Meje/Ekiti axis at the same time.
At the time of filing this report, it was not clear whether the abductors had contacted the families for ransom.
Police spokesman, Ajayi Okasanmi, who confirmed the three abductions late Sunday night, said some arrests have been made, adding that police patrols have been intensified across the state.
“The Kwara State Police Command received reports of three kidnap incidents simultaneously, according to which six armed men emerged from the bush and stopped a Siena bus, which was traveling from Ekiti state to Ilorin, and the seven passengers were forced into the bush.
“The Command immediately dispatched its anti-kidnapping and anti-cultist tactical units, joined by local hunters and vigilante members, while police patrols were alerted on the routes.
Four of the seven abducted persons were rescued, and efforts are still under way to rescue the remaining three.
The operatives who deployed similar tactics were equally successful in rescuing those abducted in Ekan-Meje/Ekiti axis using the same methods. The Command remains determined to rescue unhurt a pastor and his wife.
During an attack with the kidnappers, the police were also able to rescue all twenty passengers aboard a Toyota Hiace commercial bus. “The passengers were rescued unharmed.”
“Some suspects have been arrested and are helping with her investigation.
“The situation is under control, the good people of Kwara State are advised to go about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation or attack.”
