Feltman, the United States’ Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, warned on Tuesday that “huge progress” in bringing all parties to Ethiopia’s conflict into discussions for a ceasefire is at risk of being overtaken by a “alarming” military escalation.

On Monday, Feltman spoke with reporters in Washington after returning from Ethiopia, where he met with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and discussed the possibility of a diplomatic settlement to the ongoing violence there.

However, both Abiy and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front appear to believe they are on the verge of achieving military success, according to Feltman, who expressed concern that developments on the ground could undermine Ethiopia’s overall stability and unity.
