A policewoman and two other yet-to-be identified residents have been killed by gunmen in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
On Thursday, June 3, at about 05:30pm, a group of about seven gunmen moved into the area, firing sporadically.
Three people, including a female police officer and two men, were killed as a result of the operation which began on the Orji axis, followed by the Spibat area before visiting other areas.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen emerged from the Amakohia axis on two vehicles, a bus and Hilux, walking confidently along the road.
The slain policewoman was abducted the day the gunmen attacked Orji police station, according to SunNews.
During their operation on Thursday, they were said to have returned with the officer after their demand to exchange him with their members held failed.
In response to the non-compliance, they were said to have shot the female officer.
Having waited for some time without their demand being met, they came with the female police officer and shot her dead. The hoodlums kidnapped the officer the day they attacked the Orji Divisional Police Headquarters.
Bala Elkana, spokesman for the state police command, responded to the incident as follows:
“Orji area has returned to normal following the joint efforts of the Police and other supporting security agencies. Three people were killed by the hoodlums who blocked Orji flyover and started shooting sporadically. The cause of the shooting is still not clear at the moment. The investigation has, however, commenced.”
