During a hearing held in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, July 1, a judge sentenced prophet Olakanye Oni, a cleric at the Ekiti State High Court, to life imprisonment for the murder of a woman.

A church leader from Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Palace of Mercy, Olokuta, Ado-Ekiti, was accused of killing a woman who was seeking help for her infertility after seven years of marriage at his church.

After the cleric performed a “spiritual cleansing” on her, Mrs Omowale became ill and her health deteriorated. She died on December 13, 2017.

After the death of the woman, the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, and his council of chiefs banished the cleric.

“The cleric invited the deceased from Lagos to Ado Ekiti on the pretence that he has a solution to her barrenness,” according to the prosecution team led by Julius Ajibare, the Director of Public Prosecutions at the Ministry of Justice.

In his Church at Palace of Mercy, Mathew Street, Odo Ado Area, Ado Ekiti, the convict hypnotised the victim and lured her into his room. He then spread a white cloth over her and raped her.

“The convict used a white handkerchief to clean the victim’s private parts and inserted a substance believed to be potash into her vagina. He also collected fifty-two thousand Naira from her.”

“The victim’s private parts decayed due to the substance inserted into them by the convict, ultimately resulting in the victim’s death.”

The prosecution called six witnesses to prove its case, while Chris Omokhafe, the defence counsel, called one witness.

Judge Abiodun Adesodun ruled that the prosecution proved the cleric’s manslaughter beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
