Smugglers allegedly attacked three Customs officials and a soldier in the Igboora area of the Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State on Friday.

According to Theophilus Duniya, Customs Public Relations Officer, Federal Operations Unit Zone A, the incident occurred around 8pm on Friday.

“The Customs officers who suffered injuries were operatives of Zone A, Federal Operations Unit. They saw 8 trucks carrying smuggled foreign parboiled rice whose drivers and armed passengers attacked them.

“One of the attackers was shot and disarmed, while the others fled with their smuggled goods.

“Investigations are ongoing to arrest and prosecute the attackers. All the Customs officers and soldiers, including one who was shot in the head, are undergoing treatment,” Daniya said.

DC Usman Yahaya, the Acting Controller of the Unit, condemned the attack and reiterated the Service’s uncompromising resolve to suppress smuggling.

The acting controller of the unit has vowed to never relent or be intimidated in the face of these unwarranted attacks by criminal elements who are unlawfully carrying weapons and unleashing them on officers on legitimate duty.
