The gunmen, believed to be armed robbers, seized N100 million from the Nasarawa State Ministry of Finance, Budget, and Planning in Lafia on Thursday.
There is a Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps post and a Nigeria Police station near the premises of the Office of the State Accountant General.
However, they were unable to stop the operation.
Our correspondent was informed by an eyewitness that the suspected armed robbers followed officials of the ministry from a commercial bank in Lafia where they went to withdraw cash to pay casual workers for the ministry.
However, it was inside the ministry’s premises where the gunmen snatched the N100 million from the finance ministry’s officials as they tried to dislodge the cash from the vehicle that was transporting it to the cash room.
“As they took the N100 million, the gunmen opened fire sporadically in the air so that the officials of the ministry carrying the money and other staff members within the premises dropped to the ground, allowing them to easily snatch it.”
He claimed the ministry did not engage the services of security agencies, which was why the robbery succeeded.
State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Planning, Mr Haruna Ogbole, confirmed the robbery incident in a telephone interview, saying that the investigation was ongoing.
