COVID-19 complications have claimed the life of former President Shehu Shagari’s widow. Nigeria is currently dealing with the third wave of COVID-19.
The Sarkin Marfan Shagari (retired Capt. ), Muhammad Bala Shagari, announced in a statement on behalf of Hadiza’s family that she died at a hospital in Abuja early Thursday morning.
Hajiya Hadiza Shehu Shagari, the wife of the late President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR (Turakin Sokoto), passed away last Wednesday. We regret her passing.
During the early morning hours of today, 12th August 2021, at approximately 3:00 am, she lost the battle against Covid-19 at the Gwagwalada Isolation Center in Abuja.”
On Thursday evening, the 80-year-old deceased will be buried, according to the funeral statement.
The late Hadiza Shehu Shagari was 80 years old. The Jana’iza (funeral prayer) will take place at the National Mosque, Abuja, today at 4:00 pm, following the Asr prayer.” According to the statement.
Shagari, who served as Nigeria’s Second Republic President, died at the National Hospital in Abuja in December 2018.
The bloodless coup led by then Major-General Muhammadu Buhari ended Shagari’s tenure as president on 1 January 1984.
At the age of 93, he passed away.
