In an effort to combat banditry, 14 of the 23 Local Government Areas in the state have shut down their telecommunications networks.
Governor Aminu Tambuwal made the announcement in an interview with Voice of America Hausa Service on Monday.
Prior to enforcing the network ban, the governor said the state sought approval from the Federal Government.
According to him, the affected council areas are the most vulnerable to bandit attacks in the state.
Prior to this, the governments of Katsina and Zamfara cut off power to their states’ networks.
Sokoto had also seen the exodus of bandits to neighboring states caused by this development.
As a result of ongoing military successes in Zamfara State, bandits are fleeing to Sokoto, the governor said.
Local governments affected include Tambuwal, Dange Shuni, Goronyo, and Tangaza, where some bandits were burned to ashes on Saturday.
