Argentina made an early show of intent prior to the World Cup by defeating Italy 3-0 to win the UEFA/CONMEBOL Finalissima at Wembley Stadium.

Although Italy did not qualify for Qatar 2022, few would have predicted that the European champions would be so utterly humiliated by the Copa America 2021 champions.

Giorgio Chiellini was the subject of considerable pregame attention, but his final international game concluded at halftime with Argentina deservingly leading 2-0 thanks to goals from Lautaro Martinez and Angel Di Maria.

Paulo Dybala scored the game-winning goal with the penultimate kick of the match, preventing the inspired Lionel Messi and Di Maria from adding to Argentina’s lead.

Earlier in the 20th minute, a superb save by Cristian Romero prevented a straightforward goal by Andrea Belotti, who then had a looping header saved by Emiliano Martinez a few moments later.

But Argentina soon assumed control.

Messi deftly deflected Giovanni Di Lorenzo and held him off before throwing the ball across the goal for Martinez to score.

At the stroke of halftime, the Inter forward turned provider, turning Leonardo Bonucci and feeding Di Maria, who lofted an audacious chip over Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Roberto Mancini made three substitutions at halftime, but Argentina only grew more dominant; Donnarumma desperately scurried back to prevent a Bonucci back-pass from going in, and then again denied the outstanding Di Maria.

Giovani Lo Celso then missed an open goal, albeit from a little tight angle, after Messi’s excellent play, who then twice tested Donnarumma.

A Messi solo run worried the Italy defence, but Donnarumma was eventually overcome again by substitute Dybala, who found the bottom-right corner after a Messi single run.
