Everton defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Goodison Park, with Anthony Gordon scoring the lone goal.

Gordon’s deflected first-half goal gave the Toffees their first home victory since September.

United are three points behind of the top four, and could be six if Arsenal or Tottenham win today.

Everton, meanwhile, moved four points clear of relegation trouble with a 3-2 loss to fellow strugglers Burnley on Wednesday.

Ralf Rangnick’s team started well as they sought a first Premier League away win over Everton since September 2007.

Marcus Rashford had not scored since January’s victory against West Ham, and it took two magnificent stops from England team-mate Jordan Pickford to keep him out.

In the 27th minute, Gordon’s 20-yard effort deflected past David de Gea via Maguire, as the hosts took just 35% of the possession.

Later in the half, De Gea saved the visitors by tipping Richarlison’s deflected looping shot over the crossbar.

Everton pushed for a second goal after the interval, with Ben Godfrey missing a corner and Gordon denied by Victor Lindelof’s crucial stop.

Despite dominating possession, United were unable to equalise through Anthony Elanga’s miss and Paul Pogba’s long-range effort.
