Marist Comprehensive Academy, Uturu, in Abia, has lost a student to a shooting in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State.
Donald Edeh, the deceased, was killed while some of his colleagues were abducted.
Students from Abia State University, Uturu, were abducted in a separate attack.
On Saturday evening, a bus carrying students was attacked.
The gunmen, who were operating along Enugu-Port Harcourt road, made a detour to Uturu via Okigwe in Imo, where they also robbed motorists and passengers at Ihube along Uturu-Okigwe road.
Travellers were said to have been intercepted along a failed portion of the road.
Gunmen kidnapped scores of travelers on the same spot on June 10, 2021.
They also kidnapped a Catholic priest, Izuchukwu Onyeocha, a professor of sociology at Imo State University in Owerri.
He was released a few days later.
Many travellers were taken into the bush by the gunmen, according to an eyewitness.
Marist officials confirmed the death of one of their students in a statement on Sunday morning.
According to the statement, “Some students from Marist Comprehensive Academy, Uturu, Abia State, were ambushed and robbed by armed bandits while traveling from the final religious profession of some Marist brothers to their priestly vocation.
During the robbery attack, one student, Edeh Donald, was shot and he later died.
Another three students were injured. They are being treated and responding well to the treatment. We pray that God will guide and protect Nigerian citizens.”
The police spokesperson for Imo state, Micheal Abattam, told our correspondent that the police had swung into action.
According to Abattam, the police are treating the incident as a robbery attack, not a kidnapping.
