Ten newborns have been killed on Saturday in a huge furnace at a sanatorium in Maharashtra, India’s richest state, a medical doctor said, as main politicians expressed grief at the loss of life.
“The furnace broke out at two a.m. (2030 GMT) today,” stated Pramod Khandate, civil general practitioner at Bhandara District General Hospital in the western state. Seven of the 17 adolescents in the Sick Newborn Care Unit have been rescued, Khandate advised Reuters companion ANI.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thakre ordered a probe into the incident.
“Heart-wrenching tragedy in Bhandara, Maharashtra, the place we have misplaced valuable younger lives,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Twitter. “My ideas are with all the bereaved families. I hope the injured get better as early as possible.”
A range of different politicians, along with opposition chief Rahul Gandhi, additionally expressed their grief.
