Nigeria’s Central Bank (CBN) has agreed in principle to mint the Gambian Dalasi.
Gov. Godwin Emefiele of the Central Bank of Nigeria accepted the currency minting proposal of Gov. Buah Saidy of the Central Bank of Gambian, who led a delegation to visit him on Tuesday.
Nigeria has a lot of capacity in currency printing, since it has been minting since the 1960s, and “we are willing to assist you in printing your currency”. “We are very competitive in terms of cost,” he said.
In an earlier statement, the Governor of the Gambian Central Bank said his country is running very low on currency and wants to learn how to manage its currency needs annually by leveraging Nigeria’s wealth of experience and knowledge.
Presently, they are considering a two-year currency minting deal abroad, but they are also contemplating minting in Nigeria if the country is willing.
According to Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Plc, it is ready to negotiate with both sides.
