An officer who fatally shot a young woman at her home in Ijeshatedo has been arrested and will be charged.
In a statement signed by the Lagos State Police Command PRO, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, the police confirmed this.
On Saturday, September 11, Monsura’s sister wrote on Facebook that her sister had been shot dead by police at their home on Friday, September 10 (READ MORE). With the hashtag #JusticeForMonsura, she then called for justice.
The statement reads: "It has come to the knowledge of the Lagos State Police Command that one Monsurat Ojuade (female) aged 18, was hit by a stray bullet at about 0100hrs of 11th September 2021 when a team of detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti went on investigation activities to effect the arrest of a robbery suspect in Ijeshatedo area of the State.
Efforts were made to save the injured victim’s life. She was taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention, but died en route.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, regrets this unfortunate but avoidable incident and sincerely sympathizes with the bereaved family whose grief he shares in this moment of grief.”
In light of this, I would like to inform the bereaved family, sympathizers, and the general public that the erring officer who fired the shot has been identified and is being detained.
“The Commissioner of Police has ordered that the said police officer be tried and charged immediately after being dismissed from the force. It is hoped that this will serve as a deterrent to others who do not act professionally in the course of their work.
Despite this sad incident, the Lagos State Police Command shall continue to protect the lives and property of its citizens.”
