The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Headquarters on Broad Street in Lagos was destroyed by fire on Wednesday, destroying properties worth millions of naira.
An electrical surge caused the fire, according to reports
The fire affected three offices on the sixth floor of the building, but no one was injured.
A few employees, who requested anonymity, said they were just getting settled for the day when the fire began.
The affected staff said the safety officers took a head count of those on duty on the ground floor while they remained at a point on the floor.
Olaseni Alakija, NPA’s General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communication, confirmed the incident, saying NPA Fire Service Department personnel were immediately mobilised to the scene and quickly contained the fire.
Accordant to Alakija, the affected floor has since been cordoned off according to safety protocol while investigations are underway to see where the fire originated.
There were two desk tops, tables, chairs, and other furniture destroyed by the fire in one office. Smoke and soot also affected two adjoining offices.
The Authority appreciates the prompt response and professionalism of its Fire service and security departments and wishes to assure all stakeholders that no sensitive documents were lost, normalcy has been restored, and our operations have not been affected in any way.
