Twitter has described the decision by the Federal government to suspend its operations in Nigeria as “deeply concerning”.
Sarah Hart, Twitter’s Senior Policy Communications Manager for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said as much in an email response to The Cable. The message reads:
It is deeply concerning that the Nigerian government has suspended Twitter’s operations in Nigeria.
“We are investigating and will update you as soon as we know more,” Hart was quoted as saying.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension of the platform on Friday, June 4. He cited the “persistent use of this platform for activities that have the potential of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence” as the reason for the suspension.
