According to two witnesses and a former police official, Taliban militants fired upon protesters in the Afghan city of Jalalabad. At least three people were killed, and over a dozen were injured.

Witnesses said the deaths occurred when local residents tried to install Afghanistan’s national flag on a square in the city, some 150 kilometers (90 miles) east of Kabul.

There was no immediate comment from a Taliban spokeswoman.
