According to Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Citadel Global Community Church, anybody seeking to rule Nigeria must deal with the North.

In an interview with ThisDay, the priest and former Vice Presidential candidate said the north “has a way of handing you the crown and holding the sceptre.”

“Our glorified death certificate called the Nigerian constitution must be rejigged,” he said.

He said:

“The way our nation is set up today, whomever wants to govern it. To rectify this, our glorified death certificate called the Nigerian constitution must be rewritten.

“I can honestly tell that nearly everything that was working for the north under Ahmadu Bello is gone now. The textile industry they controlled are gone. And so forth. And they retain what they have. They wield it.

“In Nigeria, no faction can win an election on its own. “Neither the south nor the north can win an election without reaching out to the other.”

Bakare said the Buhari government has done well in the previous six years.

“We had great hopes. Sometimes I sit and wonder, has Buhari demystified himself as president, since Nigerians had great hopes when he came to power?” Bakare was reported as asking.

“First, he had never had such bad health, and it impacted the first term greatly. That was a big deal. It’s a wonder he’s still alive. In my opinion, the six years he has spent on Boko Haram or security have gone worse than he promised the people.

It is not as horrible as we believe. But I need persuasion. They attacked the train link to Kaduna recently. I told my brother Nasir el-Rufai I would wait for the train to Kaduna. They are doing their best, but no matter how you look at it, whether it economic, political, or security, you will find fault. But criticism is easier than truth. Not until I sit on that seat and perform better.”

The Pastor said he would “never trade truth for friendship.”
