Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has secured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential nomination for the 2023 general election.

Atiku received 371 votes during Saturday’s election at MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike received 237 votes, while former Senate President Bukola Saraki received 70.

The governors of Akwa Ibom and Bauchi, Udom Emmanuel and Bala Mohammed, received 38 and 20 votes, respectively.

While Anyim Pius Anyim, the previous Secretary of the Federation’s government, received fourteen votes. Diana Oliver and Samuel Ohuabumwa each received one vote, while twelve ballots were invalidated.

Atiku, commenting on his victory, pledged to strive for the nation’s development if elected president.

He felt it an honour to become the opposition party’s presidential nominee in Nigeria.

“Today, the movement to rebuild and unite our wonderful nation advances. I am honoured to be the People’s Democratic Party’s nominee for president. “I look forward to interacting with Nigerians around the nation, spreading the message of optimism and togetherness as we construct a single future for a single people,” he said.

Atiku was the PDP’s candidate in the 2019 election that President Muhammadu Buhari won.

Next week, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will choose its candidate for the 2023 elections, revealing his chief opponent.
