Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that his academic certificates were stolen when he was in self-imposed exile.

Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, stated in his sworn affidavit in support of his nomination form for the office of president that he “went on self-exile from October 1994 to October 1999 (and) when I returned, I discovered that my property, including all documents relating to my qualifications and certificates in respect to paragraph 3 above, had been looted by unknown persons.”

Bola Tinubu omitted details on his primary and secondary school on the INEC form, although he did state that he attended the University of Chicago from 1972 and 1976, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics.

He also claimed to have a Bachelor of Science in Business and Administration and a certificate in public accounting.

Bola Tinubu’s most recent assertions appear to contradict his prior election submissions, particularly in 1999, when he ran for and won the governorship of Lagos State.

He claimed to have attended both elementary and senior school.

Between 1958 to 1964, he reportedly attended St. Paul Children’s Home School in Ibadan, and between 1965 and 1968, he attended Government College Ibadan (GCI).

In 2003, as he ran for re-election, the former governor suppressed his elementary and high school academic records in response to controversy.

From 1969 to 1971, he claimed to have attended Richard Daley College in Chicago after leaving Ibadan.

Eventually, he disclosed that he attended both Chicago State University and the University of Chicago.

However, a notable Nigerian attorney, the late Gani Fawehinmi, contested all of the filings as false.
Fawehinmi, who argued the case before the Supreme Court, was unsuccessful on a technicality.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, listed his 2021 Master’s degree as his highest educational qualification on his papers.
