The governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, claims that President Muhammadu Buhari has committed to a political solution to the threat posed by the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to the South East region and the nation as a whole.

During his two-day State visit to Ebonyi, the President held a meeting with South East leaders where he made this statement.

The governor stated that President Buhari would be regarded as a guy who did not use the hardship of the people of the South East for political gain, but instead rescued them on multiple occasions.

He cautioned that the area is at a “crossroads” and asked Southern leaders to strive towards a political solution to resolve some difficult challenges.

“On the topic of a political solution, I have never believed in IPOB’s way of operation, and I disagree with them. However, we have arrived at a dreadful and pitiful conclusion.

“Some of us warned that we would reach this point, while others used it for political gain. Mr. President, we are at a critical juncture. I have visited you and appealed for a political resolution. You gladly and unexpectedly granted that request. You stated that our people should commence this, and Nnamdi Kanu’s attorney is at the forefront.”

The Governor thus advised the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo to meet with Mbazuluike Amaechi, the Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), South East, the Chairman of South East Traditional Rulers Council, Nnamdi Kanu’s attorney, and a few others to commence the political solution.

Regarding the 2023 elections, the Governor stated that he supported the call for the South East area to be allocated the President on the grounds of fairness, equity, justice, and morality.

Umahi, who is also a presidential candidate, praised politicians from outside the region for their support of a South East Nigerian as the future president of Nigeria.

Eze Charles Mkpuma, chairman of the South East Traditional Rulers, and Very Reverend Fr. Abraham Nwali, chairman of the South East Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, both spoke in favour of a South East Nigerian president in 2023.

While expressing support for a unified Nigeria, the leaders pleaded with the President to give clemency and release the IPOB leader, and urged other agitators to quit all kinds of hostility.

Buhari, addressing at the Abakiliki meeting, pledged that the Federal Government will use its resources to safeguard innocent and hardworking Nigerians from terrorists and those responsible for the breakdown of law and order in the South East.

In a statement released by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, the President expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the region and reiterated his demand to security services to “flush out” those responsible for the violence in the region.

“I must express my profound and severe concern over the deteriorating security situation in this region.
“Within the last 48 hours, I was informed of the latest in a series of barbaric acts committed by gun-wielding terrorists who prey on innocent and hardworking citizens,” he said. “Unfortunately, these barbaric acts were committed against those who have dedicated their lives to protecting their fellow citizens.

Buhari paid homage to servicemen of the Nigerian military who were recently killed in the region.

In response to appeals by traditional, religious, and political leaders in the region for the release of the detained leader of the outlawed IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, the President stated, “I have listened carefully to the various appeals from the elders to the traditional leaders regarding a wide range of options, and as I have previously stated, this matter remains in the full jurisdiction of the courts where it will be properly adjudicated.”
