Senator Iyioricha Ayu, the current national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cannot be coerced into resigning from his position, according to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The PDP presidential candidate made this statement in response to Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike’s decision to leave his campaign committee.

Allies of Wike met for several hours at his home before making their decision public.

Atiku issued a statement that he personally signed saying, “Early this morning, my attention was drawn to a news clip in which several very senior and influential members of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), addressed the press and, amongst other things, declared that they are withdrawing, forthwith, from the Presidential Campaign Council set up by our party to judiciously plan and prosecute the general elections set to hold in February and March 2023.”

I won’t speculate on the motives of the folks who spoke to the media after they resigned from the Presidential Campaign Council. Aside from the PDP chapter in Rivers State, all other states in the federation reportedly submitted names of people they wanted included in the Presidential Campaign Council, therefore I must say that I am rather astonished by this withdrawal.

Regarding the calls for our national chairman’s resignation or removal from office, however, I feel compelled to repeat what I have said publicly and privately on multiple occasions: the decision for Dr. Iyorchia Ayu to resign from office is personal to Dr. Ayu, and neither I nor anyone else can make that decision for him. To address the calls for Dr. Ayu’s resignation, I will say that I am a committed democrat and a firm believer in the rule of law and democratic tenets, and that our party is one that is set up, organised, and regulated by law and our constitution, so I believe that everything that we do in our party must be done in accordance with, and conformity to, the law and our constitution. The process of removing Dr. Ayu from office must adhere to the statutes that provide the grounds for doing so. Whatever the case may be, you will all remember that the same body with the legal authority to commence this removal from office has already voted a vote of confidence in him.

Now, our country is in the middle of a multifaceted crisis that includes things like insecurity, economic disaster, division and mutual mistrust, and disruptions in the educational system. There is hope, though, because I have a plan to solve these problems and have been graciously handed the ticket to lead our great party in the presidential elections next year, with the explicit instruction to come and head up the efforts to remedy them. In this light, I’ve contacted every member of our great party, asking them to aid me with the enormous task of righting the ship of state and reestablishing order in the nation. The difficult challenges ahead of us as a nation require the participation of every single member of the PDP, as well as every other patriot who feels the same way I do about this great nation. To that end, I pray that every decent human being will come with us to help restore and reposition our great nation. Thus, I will call on individuals in our party who have already announced their intention to leave the Presidential Campaign Council to reconsider, reverse course, and rejoin us in this fight.

We must not, for one second, abandon our duty to reconstruct this great country of ours, notwithstanding the above, for the sake of our country, our children, and those yet to be born. Therefore, it is imperative that we continue with the mission that has been given to us. Thus, we must press on with the difficult work of nation-building that lies ahead of us. May God bless us all and grant peace to our great party and our beloved country.
