The Federal Government has linked the attack on a Catholic church in Owo, Ondo State, to members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The Minister of the Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, announced this on Thursday while briefing State House reporters following a National Security Council meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
He stated that the authorities had identified ISWAP as the terrorist organisation responsible for the Owo incident.
The minister, who briefed alongside the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman, stated that the perpetrators of the act will be pursued and brought to justice.
The minister stated that the group’s objective was to push Nigerians against one another and create the impression of an ethno-religious war.
He stated that the attack was not motivated by ethnicity and urged Nigerians to unify in order to combat the terrorists.
During Sunday’s attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, scores of worshippers were killed and hundreds were injured.
