Buhari stated that all stakeholders must collaborate to achieve a peaceful transition in honour and memory of one of Nigeria’s national heroes for democracy, Chief M.K.O. Abiola, GCFR, since June 12, 2023 will mark 30 years since the annulled presidential elections of 1993.

“I am optimistic that we can do this. The early indications are promising,” he remarked.

The president stated that the 12th of June represented another Democracy Day anniversary and an opportunity to celebrate the freedom and unity of Nigeria, and he urged all Nigerians to cooperate with the government to build a peaceful and successful nation.

Buhari, pleased with the outcome of the political parties’ primaries, emphasised the need to have a “mature attitude toward campaigning and ultimately voting” as the general election campaign season approaches.

“We must never consider it as a “do or die” situation. Everyone must remember that democracy is based on the will of the majority. There must be victors and vanquished.

“I will thus use this occasion on this very unique day to urge all candidates to continue running issue-oriented campaigns and to treat their opponents with respect. As leaders, you must all exhibit high moral standards and never forget that the world is watching us and Africa looks to Nigeria as a government model. The tone you establish at the top will undoubtedly be mirrored by your followers.

“I am glad to inform the electorate that over the past seven years, our administration at all levels has made substantial investments to reform and improve our electoral laws, systems, and procedures in order to protect your votes.

“The government, legislature, and judiciary were and continue to be united and committed to ensuring that these reforms are fully implemented before to the general elections in 2023. Your right to pick your government would be respected and protected, fellow Nigerians, he declared.

Concerning the rising insecurity in parts of the country as a result of terrorist activities, the president stated that the federal government was working diligently to contain and address the challenges of insecurity and to ensure that the 2023 general elections were safe and secure for all Nigerians.

Buhari stated that if all Nigerians were united, victory over terror and destruction agents would be certain.

“On this important day, I want us all to remember and pray for all victims of terrorist operations. I have everyday sorrow and concern for all the victims and captives of terrorism and kidnapping. I and the security services are doing everything possible to ensure the safe release of these sad countrymen and countrywomen.

“For the relatives of those who have lost their lives, we will continue to pursue justice against the criminals.” We will not rest until those now held captive are released and their captors are brought to justice. If we all band together, we shall prevail over these agents of terror and destruction.

Some of our security structures have been modified. Some of the defence assets we acquired three years ago have arrived and been put into service.
