Explosive Ordinance Experts discovered three unexploded bombs on the premises of the St. Francis Catholic church in Owo, which was attacked by terrorists on Sunday and where over 50 people were killed, according to the Police Force headquarters.

Police Investigators also collected spent AK-47 pellets, and the Explosive Ordnance Devices – Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Explosives (EOD-CBRNE) unit proved the use of explosives by locating fragments of the IEDs employed.

In a similar vein, IGP Usman Alkali Baba has denounced unequivocally the cruel death of innocent Nigerians during an attack on a Catholic church.

The Force public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, issued the following statement while providing an update on the investigation: “The Inspector General of Police, IGP Usmsn Alkali Baba, has condemned in the strongest possible terms the brutal murder of innocent Nigerians in an attack on Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo state.

“Unidentified shooters carried out the attack at approximately 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2022.”

“According to preliminary findings, the gunmen entered the church carrying weapons and materials believed to be explosives.

The Explosive Ordnance Devices – Chemical Biological Radioactive and Nuclear Explosives (EOD-CBRNE) unit confirmed the use of explosives as fragments of the IEDs used were found, and after a thorough sweep of the scene, three unexploded IEDs were recovered at the scene of the incident.

“Further investigations indicated that some of the gunmen were disguising themselves as congregants, while other armed individuals who had positioned themselves in different directions around the church grounds fired into the church.

“The offenders fled the area in a stolen Nissan Sunny with the licence plate number AKR 895 AG and went via Owo/Ute road. The vehicle has been found, and its owner is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

“The IGP has ordered extensive investigations into the incident in order to bring to justice those responsible for the brutal murders of churchgoers.

“Furthermore, the IGP has ordered the deployment of specialist agents of the Police EOD-CBRNE, police experts, and other tactical units from the Force Headquarters in order to conduct a thorough investigation and immediately intercept the villains.

“Therefore, the Inspector General of Police extends his condolences to the Ondo State Government, family members, relatives, and friends of the victims who perished in the tragic attack.

“He also guarantees that the cruel murders of the unfortunate victims, particularly the young children, will face the full force of the law, and that the Force will implement tactics to prevent similar events in the future.”
