At least four officers were killed in an attack on the Atani Police Station in Anambra State’s Ogbaru Local Government Area.
The shooters carried out the attack in the early hours of Wednesday
The assailants came in the neighbourhood at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday
According to the source, four police officers were killed in the incident, including a female officer.
Since Prof Chukwuma Soludo took office as governor three weeks ago, there have been a series of assaults on police stations and other government institutions in Anambra.
Soludo has repeatedly stated that those responsible for the attacks would be held accountable.
“The hoodlums arrived around 1am, and unfortunately for us, four police officers paid the highest price,” state police spokesperson DSP Toochukwu Ikenga said, confirming the latest attack.
On hearing of the incident, the commissioner of police, CP Echeng Echeng, he said, quickly mobilised troops from all units of the command to the area.
The hoodlums, he claims, were still present when the police officers headed by the CP arrived.
According to Ikenga, the police officers’ early presence saved the day, as the hoodlums were effectively repulsed.
“We’ve already started gathering intelligence, and we’re hoping to figure out who was behind the attack,” he added.
He was, however, unable to provide the assailants’ identities.
