Mr. Nwokorie Anthony, an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officer, was assassinated in Imo State.

The official was slain during the state’s Continuous Voter Registration Exercise (CVR) in Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area.

According to the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Emeka Ezeonu, Nwokorie was slain at Nkwo Ihitte (PU 004) in Amakohia Ward (RA 02) of Ihitte Uboma LGA, while the whereabouts of two other registration personnel remained unknown.

The electoral commission halted the LGA election due to the terrible occurrence.

Festus Okoye, National Commissioner of INEC and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, declared this on Thursday.

“Prior to this occurrence, the commission had halted the CVR in the state’s Orsu and Njaba Local Government Areas due to insecurity, while the exercise is only taking place at the INEC LGA office in the state’s Oru East, Oru West, Orlu, and Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Areas.”

“The commission expresses its sympathies to Nwokorie Anthony’s family and prays that God would provide them the strength to endure the loss.” “The event has been reported to security agencies in order to investigate the circumstances that led to this regrettable tragedy and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Okoye stated.

He encouraged the President General of Imo State’s different Town Unions, as well as all relevant stakeholders, to safeguard commission personnel on national assignment.

“The safety and security of our workers is of utmost significance to the commission, especially with the decentralization of the voter registration process outside our state and local government area offices nation in our drive to serve Nigerians better,” he added.
