Iyorchia Ayu, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said that everyone who wants him to step down is a child who was not alive when the party was started.

The people who work for Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike have said that Ayu’s resignation is one of the things that needs to happen to end the crisis in the opposition party caused by the post-presidential primaries.

Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, beat Wike in the party’s presidential primary. Even though Atiku was asked to think about Wike as his running mate, he chose Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa instead, which upset the Rivers governor and his supporters.

Wike’s supporters have said that the fact that both the party’s chairman and its presidential candidate come from the same region is unfair.

But in an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Ayu said that the people who wanted him to step down were not there when they were trying to put together the party.

Ayu also said that the call for him to quit didn’t bother him.

“I was elected PDP Chairman for a four-year term, and I haven’t even been in charge for a full year yet. The Chairman’s position doesn’t change because Atiku won. I got elected because of the rules of our party.

“I didn’t do anything wrong. I’m just changing the party so I don’t have to listen to all the noises. I know I’m doing my job and haven’t stolen any money, so I don’t know why everyone is talking about me. When we began PDP, these kids weren’t there. They are kids who don’t understand why we started the party. “No one will be able to make our party unstable,” he said.
