Four adult males and a housewife drowned in an attempt to flee robbers in Chakumi village, Gurdi ward, Abaji area council, Abuja.
The river Gurara forms the boundary between Chakumi and the nearby Daku hamlet in the Dobi ward of the Gwagwalada local council in the nation’s capital.
Chakumi’s chairman, Mohammed Magaji, confirmed the event to Daily Trust, claiming it took place at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
He claimed the murdered victims, who included a middle-aged housewife, were working on the property when they encountered the robbers.
The king reportedly stated that they hastily boarded a canoe in an attempt to flee to the nearby Daku village, but that their craft collapsed while attempting to cross the river Gurara.
The bodies of the victims have not yet been found, he added, adding that fishermen from Daku and his village were still looking for them as he spoke.
Magaji, who condemned the actions of the bandits in the region, claimed that farmers were afraid to return to their farms for fear of being abducted.
Abaji LGA Vice-Chairman Ibrahim Abubakar also verified the event, saying that a member of his family was among those that perished.
“One of my relatives was among those that drowned, and their bodies have not been retrieved up until this very time that I am talking to you,” he claimed.
DSP Adeh Josephine, the FCT Police Command’s official spokeswoman, did not respond to a text message on the event.
