The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has officially recognised William Samoei Arap Ruto as the lawful President of Kenya.
It was announced by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati on Monday, August 15, 2022 at 6:03PM local time, at the Bomas of Kenya.
After receiving 7,176,141 votes, or 50.07 percent of the total votes cast, and the requisite number of 39 counties at 25%, he declared that Mr. Ruto had met the constitutional requirements.
According to Article 138 of the Constitution, “the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission thus announce that Ruto William Samoei has been legitimately elected as the President of the Republic of Kenya in the Presidential election held on August 9, 2022,” he added.
With loud shouts from his supporters, Mr. Chebukati handed Mr. Ruto the official certificate of the presidential results.
Rachel Ruto, the future First Lady of Kenya, and Rigathi Gachagua, the new Vice President, joined him.
Until Mr. Ruto was officially pronounced the winner, there was a lot of suspense.
