Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan voiced worry that the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), which he blames for the failed coup attempt against his government on July 15, 2016, is still operating in Nigeria.

Erdogan addressed a joint news conference with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, during the latter’s official visit to the country.

Erdogan invited Nigeria to assist his nation in the battle against terrorism, in a speech given in his native Turkish and translated by one of the officials in his entourage. Nigeria is one of Turkey’s longest friends in Africa, with 60 years of diplomatic relations.

“Distinguished members of the press, as Turkey, we have been carefully watching events in Nigeria, our fraternal and friendly neighbor,” he added.

“Terrorist organizations, armed gangs, and maritime bandits continue to operate in Nigeria, and the Nigerian government continue to combat them. Thus, in order to expand our cooperation in the areas of military, defense, and security, we are doing all possible….

“As we are undoubtedly all aware, Turkey has been battling terrorist organizations for decades, including the PKK, PYD, FETO, DASH, and others.

“The perpetrator of the July 15th attempted coup, FETO, continues to operate unlawfully in Nigeria, and we are constantly sharing our information with Nigerian interlocutors and authorities. I hope and pray that our Nigerian brothers would develop a stronger sense of solidarity with us, the Republic of Turkey, in this area. I pray and hope that our visit will be fruitful, and I would want to express my gratitude to my illustrious brother, President Buhari, for being such a kind host to me and my team,” he added.
